REMIRIO is a partnership between Comune di Milano and Rio de Janeiro in the frame of the EU program “City to City Cooperation”.

This project is a pioneering initiative dedicated to transforming urban resilience and sustainability in Rio de Janeiro. Focused on Vila Operária Salvador de Sá, a historic neighborhood with deep socio-economic and environmental challenges, REMIRIO seeks to develop and implement innovative urban regeneration strategies.

Vila Operária Salvador de Sá is a vibrant yet vulnerable community situated near the heart of Rio de Janeiro. The area faces multiple issues, including social conflicts, flood risks, heat island effects, traffic congestion, and inadequate connectivity. These challenges demand a comprehensive and nuanced approach to urban planning and regeneration.

To address these complex issues, the REMIRIO Project employs the Integrated Modification Methodology IMM, which thoroughly diagnoses urban systems, utilizing both horizontal and vertical investigations to understand the spatial and systemic dynamics at play. By dissecting urban layers such as built-up volumes, voids, types of uses, and urban networks, IMM provides a detailed analysis of key categories like porosity, proximity, permeability, accessibility, effectiveness, interface, and green continuity.

One of the standout features of the REMIRIO Project is its focus on green continuity as the transformational catalyst. By integrating urban green spaces with natural features, we aim to create a connected and comprehensive green infrastructure network. This not only enhances biodiversity and provides essential ecosystem services but also mitigates urban heat island effects, reduces flood risks, and improves the overall quality of life for residents.

The insights gained from our rigorous diagnostic process enable us to develop targeted strategies that align with local needs and agendas. By involving local stakeholders and decision-makers, we ensure that our solutions are practical, sustainable, and replicable across similar urban contexts. The REMIRIO Project is not just about addressing immediate challenges but also about fostering long-term resilience and sustainability in urban environments.
